Tinged with a loved one&#8217;s regret, haunted by the societal forces of neglect and misunderstanding, it&#8217;s a quietly devastating work from first-time filmmakers Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman.<br \/>\n<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/movies\/la-et-mn-oscar-shorts-review-20160129-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Times<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>My personal favorite of these five shorts,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt4172096\/\">Last Day of Freedom<\/a> is a real outlier among not only the nominees this year, but also most nominees in this category\u2019s history in being animated. [&#8230;] On top of that, the Academy could hardly choose a more topical winner in the wake of the prominence of Black Lives Matter and our criminal justice system in the American political dialogue.<\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.awardscircuit.com\/2016\/02\/16\/2016-oscar-circuit-best-documentary-short-subject\/#disqus_thread\" target=\"_blank\">AwardsCircuits<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;And in year of #OscarsSoWhite, that Last Day of Freedom also comes with a #BlackLivesMatter subtext makes this one seem like a slam-dunk [&#8230;] blisteringly attests to the inhumanity of the death penalty and the legal system&#8217;s racial bias, and through a dexterous use of animation that reflects Babbitt&#8217;s existential anguish.<br \/>\n<\/em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slantmagazine.com\/house\/article\/oscar-2016-winner-predictions-documentary-short\" target=\"_blank\">Slant Magazine Review<\/a><\/span><\/span><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230; The standout in the documentary category is the animated \u201cLast Day of Freedom.\u201d An African-American named Bill Babbitt is portrayed in simply drawn lines as he tells the story of his brother, Manny, who served in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart, only to be executed later on for murder after his PTSD went untreated. The film is not only timely in its example of both the military\u2019s neglect of battle-worn soldiers and racial injustice (\u201cBrother, these are good cops,\u201d Bill had told Manny), but Bill is also a wonderful storyteller, keeping you engaged with his emotional and nearly poetic recollections. And then, well after he wins you over, additional facts revealed before the closing credits will break your heart.<br \/>\n<\/em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/oscar-nominated-short-films-2016-review-don-hertzfeldt-claude-lanzmann-pixar\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Wrap<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em> l love \u201cLast Day of Freedom.\u201d It boasts beauty and importance equally, and at the same time, pulses at an excruciating pace. Talisman and Hibbert-Jones breathe palpable empathy into their animation, and Babbitt\u2019s internal conflict feels as real as the societal problems it reflects<\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ndsmcobserver.com\/2016\/02\/96151\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Observer<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230; Last Day of Freedom is a gem of a documentary both in style and content. Directors Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman use bare-bones animation to tell this story in a surprisingly evocative way<br \/>\n<\/em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.santafenewmexican.com\/pasatiempo\/movies\/movie_reviews\/speed-watching-a-selection-of-oscar-nominated-shorts\/article_0e520bf0-0146-58a6-939a-a26247cebcb0.html\">Santa Fe New Mexican<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Of the five films, the 32-minute \u201cLast Day of Freedom\u201d makes the biggest creative departure<br \/>\n<\/em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/losangeles\/news\/2016\/01\/28\/flick-picks-oscar-shorts-deliver-occasional.html\" target=\"_blank\">L<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/losangeles\/news\/2016\/01\/28\/flick-picks-oscar-shorts-deliver-occasional.html\" target=\"_blank\">A Biz Journal<\/a><\/span><\/span><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Documentary nominees are also naturally very issues-oriented, though the use of animation to tell a tragic, true story about crime, punishment and PTSD makes Last Day of Freedom especially intriguing<br \/>\n<\/em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chicagoist.com\/2016\/01\/27\/see_all_the_oscar-nominated_shorts.php\" target=\"_blank\">The Chicagoist<br \/>\n<\/a><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<em>For any regular Netflix head, it is hard not to notice the number of viewers focused on shows circulating around incarceration and the criminal justice system. Perhaps this is attributed to the growing success of the Black Lives Matter movement or from decades of activists\u2019 work to eliminate jails. Whatever the cause, shows exploring the flaws of the criminal justice system, like Making a Murderer,\u00a0are growing in popularity, but none can be more compelling or righteous than the Last Day of Freedom [&#8230;] Despite what one thinks of the death penalty, this is not a movie to miss.<br \/>\n<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uloop.com\/news\/view.php\/187921\/Last-Day-of-Freedom-A-Documentary-We-Shouldnt-Ignore\" target=\"_blank\">Samantha Alsina<em>, ULoop<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>And while there has been much furor over the lack of Blacks in this year\u2019s Oscar line-up, \u201cLast Day of Freedom\u201d has been nominated as Best Documentary Short Subject. This Best Documentary Short Oscar nominee is innovative, artful, emotionally powerful, and politically significant and not surprisingly many critics seem consider it the favorite. <\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmleaf.net\/showthread.php?4107-LAST-DAY-OF-FREEDOM-%28Dee-Hibert-Jones-Nomi-Talisman-2015%29-Oscar-nom-doc-short\" target=\"_blank\">Crish Knipp, Filmleaf<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>As the audience listens enraptured and dreading the outcome, the medium allows a distance between the story and the listener which is needed in order to absorb every detail, and one does not want to miss a word.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I would put my money on this film at least as one of the five nominations to be announced on January 14.
